Believing that one can change is an important ingredient to be able to make and sustain changes. Restoring hope and confidence are critical elements when working with clients with histories of trauma, frequent treatment failures, and other disempowering life experiences. Supporting self-efficacy can be done by the practitioner demonstrating a positive and optimistic attitude, faith in the client’s ability to make changes, and a focus on client strengths and successes, however small they may initially seem.
